The Social Work Department welcomes and interviews those associates who visit AFAL for the first time. They also provide orientation and basic information concerning Alzheimer’s disease and its impact on the affected families. Associates are given basic guidelines on how to treat the sufferer and they are reminded of the importance of special cares for the carers.
They are also informed on those Association activities that could adjust to the needs of the problem situation presented by the family as well as on the adequate social resources; depending on the phase the sufferer is living and the social situation of the family. The family is supported and their progress is followed throughout the duration of the disease. Both by means of interviews and telephone assistance, help is given to solve problem situations that present themselves.
The functions of the AFAL Social Worker also include:
- The coordination of training activities for relative carers
- The coordination of psychological support
- The coordination of the Help at Home program
- The coordination of the Sunday Break program
- Visits to the different socio-geriatric centres for Alzheimer’s or other dementia sufferers.
Through its social assistance services, AFAL seeks to create an atmosphere of empathy and listening for the relatives of Alzheimer’s sufferers, to strengthen their own personal resources and to guide them when solving their problems. All this is done in order to confront the disease in the best possible way and improve the living quality of both carers and sufferers. Ultimately, WE HELP YOU HELP YOURSELF.
